August 02, 1879 ~ Saturday

2nd We had our Prayers in the morning Petone wanted me to go
with him He Painted himself up with white clay and striped
his limbs like an Antelope then Put on a shirt striped like an
Antielope then put on an artificial Antelope's Head & horns
on his head. He was then ready for a hunt He started out on

Daybook (28 February - 23 October 1879)
Aug 2nd Petone painted up with clay and striped his limbs like an Antilope put on a shirt coated like an Antilope then put on an Antilope Head & horns on his head was ready for a hunt. He wished me to go with him we started out mou- nted on Horsback over the Hills & vallies An Indian with us soon shot a Deer with 2 young fawns one fawn was killed the other we caught alive. we soon saw an Antilope which was shot and Dressed and put onto the Horses we then travelled several Miles

and saw a Buck Antilope Petone with his Head dress drew the Buck up to him & He shot him dead in his tracks He was soon Dressed & Petone had two Dressed Antilope on his horse and as He had travelled on a run for hours & I had to run to keep up with him I was in hope He would go to camp slower But when He started with some 350 lbs on his Horse He started in a gallop which He kept up for Miles untill we reached the camp and I arived quite weary having rode 20 Miles & mostly on a gallop I remained the rest of the day mostly in camp Petone went out again hunting as soon as we got our Diner they killed 5 old ones & 2 young ones
