Letter from Lot Smith, 25 June 1889
Reservoir Canyon, . Prest. W. Woodruff: Dear Brother, The Sherrif says he was not after me but said he was to throw the Lee Boys off the scent or their friends that might notify them he was after them. they have gained Some noteriety in helping the train Robers across Lee's ferry, they came to the head of this Canyon with their band of horses heard he was coming left the band & skipped where he knows not. I think they are bad men. My son Jed and Bro. Lamb got here 12 hours ahead of the Sherrif I would not have forgave them if they could not do that well, they were a little fearfull for he had one of our bread of horses but he had seen his best days. I wrote you a week since asking an apeal from the Decision of the High Council. I have since received the minutes of the Council. I did not attend it was not concidered safe for me to do so. Farnsworth testified things there I think it no more than Just I be alloued to answer & if you grant the rehearing I hope you will grant this request. I was not sure you would get the other letter so I send this. (I wish to send to you the testimony I sent to the Council for it is not on the minutes and Bro. Tanner says he did not nor could not get the testimony before the council & that he wishes to make that Statement to you.) (The last paragraph is on a seperate sheet of paperand may not belong in the same letter but seems to. George S. Tanner.) Wheat ripe & is good health of the people good. Your Brother Lot Smith P.S. There were a few words in one of your letters I must answer a little. You advise me to make friends with all good men. I acknowledge the wisdom of the Council. Show me the man I have not done so with and I will ask his forgiveness more than Seventy times seven. Lot
