Letter from Karl Gottfried Maeser, 17 July 1889
Provo City, President Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother, The telegram of Bro. Reynolds, concerning those Stakes that have not yet secured Principals was just received. In answer I report as follows: Bannock Stake Academy at Rexburg has not reported, but it is presummed that Bro. Spori with his Assistant, Bro. Nielson, will continue, although the former is just now on the Underground in consequence of the unfortunate test oath trouble. To Cassia Stake Board I have written today in answer to Bro. Thos. E. Harper's letter sent to me by Bro. Reynolds and among other points sugges- ted to them the name of Bro. Geo. Cole, who graduated this spring before the Board of Examiners and lives in that Stake. Oneida Stake Academy at Franklin has not yet re- ported nor has asked for a successor to Bro. Cornwall, retired on account of ill health. Bear Lake Academy at Paris has not reported. Box Elder Stake Academy has no Principal and does not know how to pay one as they say. I have transferred Bro. Jos. J. Anderson from there to Sevier Stake Academy at Richfield, and Bro. Hayes, resigned on account of taking a course in the Sciences.
Letter from Franklin Dewey Richards, 17 July 1889
Prest. Wilford Woodruff . Presidents Office Salt Lake City Dear Brother—Sometime last October Brother Moris Peterson who was living at Moab, Emery County in this Territory informed me that a short tine previous he had fallen in company with a stranger who was traveling through the Territory, and who in conversation informed him that on a previous occasion as he was passing through with a team (if I recollect right) he found by the way side a Record Book containing various matters of what might be of interest only to the one who had lost it & stating ^also^ that the names of several of our leading men were contained in it. Brother Peterson further stated that this man offered to return the Record if he knew who to return it to and gave Br. P. his name & address which is "N. S. Batcheller, Freedom, Lasalle Co Ills." On the 15th of last October I addressed a note to Mr Batcheller as above permitting him to send it to this address & offering to pay the necessary expressage but have received no reply. Most truly F. D. Richards.
