To President Wilford Woodruff

Dear Bro,

Yours of Oct 31st to hand. In answer will say
that I was somewhat surprised when I received
yours, yet pleased indeed to learn that I had been
thought worthy to go and preach the Gospel to the
Nations. As you wish to know my feelings
in regard to this matter I will state them in as few
words as I possiablly can.

My circumstances and condition are not as favorable
at this time as I could wish. For a number
of years past I have been trying to give my
children (that is those who are old enough) as good
an education as my limited means would afford.
Beleaving it to be the duty of every parent to look
well to the training of their children and to see that
they have all the advantages of a good and true
education, so that they can become useful and
powerful in defending the cause of Zion both
religiously and politically, so that they would be
equal to any foe who should assail his rights.

My family consist of 8 children 4 Boys and 4
girls one boy is married the remainer are at home
that is they have not left our table. About 4 years
ago my boy Walter S. became 17 years old and
We started him to the B Y Academy, after he had
been there one year we started Laura I. we
kept them at the academy 2 years each

and not being a man of means it took every
dollar we could get to pay for them, so much
so that we had to deprive ourselves in
some instances, but we were determing
by the help of our Heavenly Father to keep
them there and we did so. And the progress
and re^c^ord they made we are prowed of and
whatever we may have suffered in the past
our joy is made full at present when we
look upon them and the prospect of seeing
them become very useful in the future.

This fall we sent the next one Angie E who
makes the 3rd one. Now through these years
we strugled for this education and welfare.

About three years ago Bro David John
Stake Supt of Sunday Schools called me to
be one of his assistents of this stake and although
it has taken a little means to go from place to
place, there has been no labor, which I have
been called upon to do, that has given me
more joy and satisfaction.

A little over six months ago our worthy
Bishop called me on the home mission which
labor I enjoy very much this takes a little
means also, And ^yet^ I wish ^it^ understood that I
do not complain no, no, I am only too pleased
to be able to do it and thankful to be thought
worthy. There are many other ^duties^ which I am

now performing which I will not name, but
should you desire the information our Bishop
can give it.

I now have the care of my aged Father
(My mother having died many years ago) who
is at the advanced age of 84 he has been
with me for 17 years, he has now become
quite febel in body and his mind is not
as good as it was a few years ago and
he needs constant care and attention. I have not
thought it wise as yet to tell him of my
call. The only help I have now is my little
Boy 13 years old and to leave the cares of home
and my Father upon my wife I am afraid
she would brak down under the load.

I am in my 52 year but I do not put this
as an excuse if all other things were equal

Now if it should be thought wise to
liberate me from this mission it would it
would please me. But my home duties be they
few or be they many I wish to performe
to the best of my ability and I hope to the
satisfaction of my Brethren

I spoke above of my son Walter S. he is
now 21 years old. He is teaching school
in the next County South—Juab
as I said above I am proud of him and
should it be thought wise at the proper

time to call him to take a mission to my
native land "Gt Briton" it would be an
honor to him and a source of co^m^fort to me

I have told him he would have to go some
time and perhaps go over the grounds I
went over in the years of [18]61, 2, 3, and part
of 4. I will say that he has been engaged
for this school year which will end about
May or June 1891.

I will now close praying that our Hevenly
Father will bless you with his Holy Spirit and
make you equal to the trying hour

I am your Bro in the Gospel of peace

Most Respectfully
