Salt Lake City Utah,

President Wilford Woodruff

Dear Brother:

I take pleasure once
more in writing you respecting the
condition of things in the Indian
Territory
. Since I wrote you last
Elders Ashton and Woolley have
been verry sick, but have recouver-
ed and are out traveling again.
I have urged upon them the neces-
sity of reporting at once their con
dition, they neglected it for some
time concequently I have not
been able to write you as soon
a[s] I should like to have done.
Elder Smith now in charge has
been away Eighteen months, he
is becoming somewhat delicate

Page 2

When exposed he has the chills
come back on him. I feel to
recommend that he be released
about the first of the year and
another elder sent to take his place.
He, as also two others of the brethren
have the itch verry badly.
I shall send them a perscription
and advise them to remain at
one place if possible until well.
They have had a hard season
of it, but seem to be picking
up some now.

There has been several bapt-
isms of late and prospects
for others. Respecting the language
the Elders report that from all
they can learn in the other

nations (civilized) is about
as I have represented to you
of the Cherokee. They are discou-
raging their own and introd-
ucing as much as possible
the English. They are willing
to do all they can in the matter
if we only say the word.
For my part I feel that life
is too short for an elder to
spend possibly a year in a
small circle of natives in
learning and using the language
when nine tenths if not more
of the whole inhapbitance talk
and understand the language
(that is English) I am willing
to do all I can and am

open to corriction, and desire
advise on the subject.
When we spread our labors
into the reservations among
the wild Indians there they
will have to learn their
respective language's.

The elders feel as well as can
be under their itching conditions
The few Saints feel well and
are doing all they can for
the cause.

Kind regards to all
I remain as ever
Your Brother
