Letter from Asahel Hart Woodruff, 10 December 1837
Terre Haute Dear brother You enquire in your last whether I get the "Latter Dayy Saints" from Kirtland. I do and am obliged for the favor but to whom I am indebted I do not know unless yourself I have read some of the com- munications in the "Elders Journal" with a good deal of interest but I must have leave to say that I do not admire the style and spirit of the Letter from England particularly that part which related to the pious devotion of brother Kemball to his wife and children and Jesus Christ. I do not perceive any necessary connection in idea between the crucifixion of JOur Savior and the welfare of ones wife and children and why the latter clause was added I cannot conceive unless to prevent the jealousy of his wife. It is very seldom that I get Letters from home the latest however render accounts of good health and general prosperity I believe the situation of our family in Farmington is more agreeable than before the sojourn in Colebrook. Mother and Eunice express their satisfaction with the advantages of good society which they enjoy and I immagine they improve it better than they formerly did. They write that they receive every desireable attention. You will recollect that I was interrupted in my last, in the pursuit of an interesting subject, by an "inexpressible" but I am happy to assure you that no harm was done or other effect produced than the excitement of a few sensations which soon wore off leaving me cool and calm. But to return—I was speaking of the confusion
