Letter from Edward William Tullidge, 31 December 1888
Salt Lake City, Utah, Dear Brother Wilford,—I wish I could have seen you personally upon the matter of which I have addressed your Quorum. I have spoken personally of Lorenzo and Bishop Preston, each of whom said he would help my appeal to the Trustee-in-Trust. That I shall have also your sympathy in my historical work I have no doubt, as it was yourself who set me at that work over twenty-five years ago; and you have said, "Edward Tullidge is as much called to write the history of His people as I am to be an Apostle"; in which your beloved departed wife, who was to me as a mother, so fully and often confirmed with like impressions. It was and is the truth; and whatever may be my personal faults, you will all bear witness that I have faithfully justified the mission as an Historian which God and Wilford Woodruff, George A. Smith, and finally Brigham Young gave me. I would like once more to see your, dear Brother Wilford. God bless and preserve your life to the length of your grandfather's. A Happy New Year to you. Oh that Sister Phoebe wereas living to see her Wilford the Head of the Church! I greatly miss her and revere her memory. With reverence and love toward yourself, I remain Your Brother, Edward.
