Woodruff, Dear Brother, Will you permit me to trespass upon a little of your time by asking a few questions upon an important matter, to me at least? Letter to the Presidents of Stakes, Bishops of Wards, and the Latter-day Saints Generally, 8 July 1889
p. 810 #"Mr. H. H. Bancroft, of the Bancroft Publishing Company of San Francisco, has published a series of volumes on the History of the Pacific States, and has devoted one volume of the series exclusively to Utah. He has taken every pains possible to give a correct history of Utah affairs. At the same time he has been careful to write it from a standpoint that will make it acceptable to the world generally as an impartial statement of facts. He has given copious footnotes, in which all the works published by our enemies are quoted from; but the text of the work is written in the interest of truth. Of course, it is not written as a Latter-day Saint would write it. If it were, it would not be accepted by the world as reliable, but would be looked upon as a partisan publication. "HMr. Bancroft stands high in the intellectual and literary world as an able historian. It is well known that he has had unusual facilities for obtaining (end p. 810) correct information concerning the various topics upon which his works treat; and there is no doubt that his volume on Utah will be accepted as a standard work and will be quoted freely from by writers upon our question. It will have a place in all the leading libraries in the world. "We are desirous that this work should receive a wide circulation, and we hope that our people generally will purchase this volume, so that the publisher may receive a proper remuneration for the trouble and expense that he has been at in getting it up. We have put him to considerable trouble in various ways, and he naturally expects that the workk will be received with favor by our people, and that we will avail ourselves of the opportunity of obtaining it. "Brother James Dwyer has been appointed the agent to procure subscriptions for this volume on Utah. Whatever aid you can render him in this labor, to make his canvass a successful one, will be appreciated by Your Brethren, Wilford Woodruff Geo. Q. Cannon Jos. F. Smith First Presidency
