Letter from David Patten Woodruff, circa 11 April 1890
Daring Robbery. David P. Woodruff, of the Co- operative Store, Vernal, Uintah County, writes to his father, Presi- dent Woodruff, under date of the 7th inst., as follows: We had quite a robbery last night about half-past eight o'clock. As Enos Bennion, son of S. R. Bennion, was on a ladder in the act of getting down a hat from a shelf for a customer, two armed men en- tered the store, one of whom ordered him to get down and open the safe. He (Bennion) paid no attention to the demand. He was ordered a second time, and on again refusing the man shot at him, the ball passing through his hat rim, scorching his face. Bennion then went to the safe at the point of the revolver, and opened it. He handed the silver drawer to the robber, who put the contents into a sack. The robber then ordered him to hand out the greenbacks. Another drawer was opened and the currency handed to him. This seemed to satisfy the thief, as no other demand was made. The amount stolen was about $75. One of the robbers guarded the door while the other got the money. This being done they marched the clerk and some boys that were in the store at the time out into the street. They then mounted their horses, fired a couple of shots in the air, and trav- eled. I had gone to a water meet- ing, and was not in the store at the time. One of the parties that com mitted the robbery is well known here; he is a young man about 23 years of age.
