Letter from John Jacob Vetterli, 3 July 1891

Dear Brother Woodruff! Your communication of the 1st inst. came in my possession, and felt not a little surprised, as well as grateful for being considered worthy and acceptable, as a missionary to the nations of the earth. But with deepest regrett, must inform you, that it seems to me impossible to partake of this privilege, and to respond to the call, at as early a date as the 18th of this month, as I havent got the ready means on hand, and it looks very doubtful, wether I'd be able to obtain the nesessary means by that time. I have got some means coming to me, should I receive the same before the 29th of August, I would gladly and willingly respond to the call, if not, I would kindly ask you for a little more time. I shall do the best of my ability, and with the help of the Lord, hope to be enabled, to comply with the request very soon. Awaiting a reply I remain Your humble Brother in the Gospel John Vetterli. If it be right to strive for its possession in small amounts, is it not right to seek its possession in greater, and consequently more useful, amounts? If, as the Book of Mormon says "to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God," may it not also be said "to be rich is good if they will hearken to the counsels of God"? Based always, therefore, upon the presump- tion that the possessor of either spiritual or temporal power will "hearken to the counsels of God" is it not of greater moment to be
