Recd 8 Aug. 1891 [end of sideways text] Fagalii Upolu Samoa July 15th 1891 To the First Presidency Dear Brethren We have very bad news to report this month and our hearts are filled with sympathy for all those who will be affected by the same. In reporting Sister Merrills condition last month we thought she was recovering but she had a billious attack and could not keep any food on her stomach. As a result her body became very weak, and a premature birth was the consequence. This happened on the 28th of June. The child was born alive and all right but the placenta remained several hours and required the exertions of the doctor to bring it. The child not being mature enough to nurse or partake of nourishment died the next ^day^ at about two o'clock P.M. Before the death, it was blessed and named Joseph Aroiet Merrill. We did not consider it wise that the mother should know of the death of her child so we concealed the fact from her. An hour after the death of the child, the mother
