Transcript

In May 1842, Wilford Woodruff did temple work for his grandparents and great-grandparents.

On the 29th, he recorded, "I was . . . baptized under the hands of Elder George Albert Smith for and in behalf of my grandfather Eldad Woodruff and grandmother Dinah Woodruff.”

Then on the 30th he recorded, “I was baptized under the hands of George Albert Smith for my great-grandfather Thompson and my great-grandmother Thompson. Also for my grandfather Lot Thompson and my grandmother Anna Thompson.”

You'll notice that Wilford Woodruff was baptized for his great-grandmothers and also his grandmother, which goes against what we currently do in our temples, and the reason for that is that this took place before Brigham Young revealed to the Saints that you should be baptized for someone of your own gender. That guidance did not come until three years later in 1845.

For me, every time I do temple work for one of my ancestors and bring family names to the temple, it makes the experience a lot more meaningful. How is your temple experience different when you do work for your family members?
