2023 Building Latter-day Faith Conference Arts Contest Rules
OFFICIAL RULES, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES
THEME “Building Latter-day Faith”
ORIGINAL WORK
All entries must be original works, based on the entrant’s own concept or premise. Entries that infringe on copyright or have been plagiarized entirely or contain plagiarized elements will be disqualified.
CATEGORIES
Submissions will be accepted by category. The entry categories are:
- Art: 2-D Art, 3-D Art, Digital Art
- Performance: Theater, Dance, Cinema, Musical Composition
- Literary: Literary Composition
DIVISIONS
All entries will be judged against the other entries submitted within the same Division and Category. Collaborative works will be judged within the Division that corresponds to the highest level applicable to a member of the collaborative group. The division levels are 1) Student: high school or undergraduate student 2) Pre Professional: graduate student and emerging professional.
TECHNICAL COMPLIANCE
To be eligible, each entry must comply with the technical specifications outlined for its category.
APPROPRIATE CONTENT
The Wilford Woodruff Papers Foundation seeks to be a positive influence for young artists and their families. Consequently, only submissions deemed “family-friendly” in nature will be accepted. Entries that contain violent, bigoted, or sexually-explicit elements will not be considered for entry in the contest or for display at the venue. The Foundation reserves the right to determine whether any entry meets these standards.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Entries submitted are not guaranteed to be included in the contest. All entries will be screened by the Wilford Woodruff Papers Foundation to determine if they meet the criteria for inclusion in the contest.
AWARDS
- The Categories will be combined as follows for awards: Art (2-D, 3-D, and Digital), Performance (Theater/Dance/Music/Cinema), and Literary Composition.
- All individuals who submit entries will be awarded a $30 scholarship (conference attendance fee).
- First Place winners in the Art, Performance, and Literary Categories will be awarded $1,000, plus travel expenses to attend the Conference and present the winning entry in person. First Place will be awarded in two Divisions: Student (High School / Undergraduate) and Preprofessional (Graduate / Preprofessional).
- Audience Choice winners in each category (Art, Performance, and Literary) and Division (Student and Preprofessional) will each receive $100
GALLERY AND PRESENTATION OF WINNERS
The Conference venue will include a gallery displaying entries and prior to the Conference the entries will be included in an online gallery on our website at wilfordwoodruffpapers.org.
JUDGING CRITERIA
All entries will be judged according to the following criteria for placement awards:
- Originality and creativity displayed in execution of concept (25%)
- Artistic merit (25%)
- Entry's relation to the theme (25%)
- Entry's relation to Wilford Woodruff's teachings, life, and historical accuracy (25%)
JUDGE RECRUITMENT / JUDGING PROCEDURES
Well-qualified judges will be chosen who desire to further the artistic development of participants by inspiring and instructing through their feedback, and working to remain impartial throughout the judging process.
Although relatives of the contest participants, administrators, and judges are not prohibited from entering the contest or serving as judges, the Foundation will assure that all judges are vetted so as to avoid any known connections with entrants, and the anonymity of entrants will be maintained during the review by judges to ensure the integrity and credibility of the contest.

Collaboration is welcome. Please include information for all collaborating individuals on the entry form.

CATEGORY SPECIFICATIONS AND RULES:
FOR ALL ENTRIES:
- Read and comply with these Official Rules, Policies, and Procedures.
- Complete and submit online entry form at www.wilfordwoodruffpapers.org for each piece of art by February 1, 2023. Entry form must be received by midnight Mountain Time on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. No exceptions will be allowed.
- For each physical piece of art, please mail or deliver it to: WWPF Arts Contest, 4025 W. Centennial St., Cedar Hills, Utah, 84062. Digital entries and physical entries must be received by midnight Mountain Time on Friday, February 4, 2023. No exceptions will be allowed.
- A digital image or video of each entry in the art category must be submitted with the online application. The digital image/video will be used for judging purposes and be included in the online art gallery.
FOR EACH DIVISION:
2-D VISUAL ART
Original drawing/illustration in pencil, charcoal, ink, pastels, chalk; printmaking through serigraphy/screen printing, linoleum cuts, woodcuts, or other; painting in tempera, oil, acrylic, watercolor, sand; collage, engraving, metal etching or punch work, or mixed-medium work. (This list is not definitive.)
- "Flat" artwork is limited to 24" x 36" x 3".
- No kits or pre-casts are allowed.
- Artist is responsible for transportation/shipping entry to and from the contest venue. The Foundation will not take responsibility for the art during transportation or pay for/reimburse the cost of transportation.
- If your artwork is too large or impractical to ship, you can choose to submit digital images of your art instead of the physical artwork.
- NOTE: Submitting your artwork via digital images only will impact the judges’ ability to fully assess and evaluate entry.
3-D VISUAL ART
The original creation of ceramics, sculpture, models, dioramas, mobiles, jewelry, leather and wood working, metal soldering, stained glass, mosaics, fabrics. (This list is not definitive.)
- "Dimensional" artwork is greater than 3" high.
- No kits or pre-casts are allowed; only original works will be accepted.
- Artist is responsible for transportation/shipping entry to and from the contest venue. The Foundation will not take responsibility for the art during transportation or pay for/reimburse the cost of transportation.
- If your artwork is too large or impractical to ship, you can choose to submit digital images of your art instead of the physical artwork.
- NOTE: Submitting your artwork via digital image only will impact the judges’ ability to fully assess and evaluate your entry.
LITERARY COMPOSITION
Original creative writing such as poetry, playwriting, film or historical scripting. (This list is not definitive.) All written composition with or without illustration:
- Upload a digital PDF file format version of your entry as part of the online entry form.
- Eligible length up to five pages in a 12-point font.
- Indicate if you are willing to read your composition at the Conference if chosen as a winner.
DIGITAL MEDIA
Any original form of photography or computer-manipulated imagery, including digitally-altered photos, 3-D images created through the use of a computer program, app, or 3-D software. (This list is not definitive.)
- No templates are allowed; only original work will be accepted.
- Upload the original digital data file as part of the online entry form. Acceptable file formats include pdf and jpg.
THEATER
Any original presentation of musical theater, melodrama, immersive theater, autobiographical, tragedy, solo theater, historic plays, or epic. (This list is not definitive.) All submissions must include:
- A digital PDF file format version of your script as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- A digital mp4 of acting as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- Indicate if you are willing to perform live at the Conference if chosen as a winner.
DANCE
Original choreography in all styles of movement: ballet, modern contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, tap, ballroom, or improvisation. (This list is not definitive.) All submissions must include:
- A digital mp4 of dance as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- A mp4 of music used as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- Indicate if you are willing to perform live at the Conference if chosen as a winner.
CINEMA
Original short films, documentaries, testimonials, animated films, film adaptations, or silent films. (This list is not definitive.) All submissions must include:
- A digital PDF file format version of your script and storyboard as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- A digital mp4 as part of the uploaded online entry form.
MUSICAL COMPOSITION
Original arrangement showcased through vocal or musical instrument performance. All submissions must include:
- A digital PDF file format version of your sheet music as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- An mp4 of music as part of the uploaded online entry form.
- Indicate if you are willing to perform live at the Conference if chosen as a winner.
