30th I spent the day at home & I was in council in the evening

Letter to Phebe Whittemore Carter Woodruff and Abraham Owen Smoot, 30 March 1847
To Mrs Woodruff, & A. O. Smoot, Z. Pulsipher & J. Benbow, & all whom it may concern greeting As I am about to take my leave of this place & go to the mountains as one of the pioneers I deeme it expedient for me to leave an account of my affairs on paper & my wishes concerning them for the benefit of the captains of companies who may assist Mrs Woodruff in my affairs after my departure I will first give an account of my flock of cattle in whose hands they are in & what has been paid for Herding &c the following is the account. Oct. 18476 I delivered into the Hands of Mr Mercer in Mr Lathrops Herd, Eight yoke of cattle of the following descriptions One yoke of Moose coular [color] 4 years old off ox dark face. One yoke white & red 4 years old Nigh ox white with small red spots off ox Bright red white under the Belly One yoke Mulings. Nigh ox Bright red, dark face small Horns off ox white & yellow right Horn off One yoke 2 year olds lined Backs well matched One yoke 2 years old, off ox white & red, white face, & Bull Head Nigh ox dark Brindle One yoke of lined Black, 7 years old. off ox a large wart on the right hip One yoke of light red 10 years old both white face ^that Aphek Woodruff drove on his waggon^ One yoke one 3, the other 4 years old, the 3 years old is a dark Brindle ^flaring Horns^ (his mate is in Br Bates Herd) the 4 year old is Bright red loped Horns being the Heard in all. all Branded with W W on one Horn & a large W on one Hip mostly on the right Hip. Brother Mercers Bill according to the custom of Herding would be $32. I have paid $1.50 ^leaving his due^ in Meal leaving $30.50. Eight yokes, 4 chains & 4 ropes were taken with the cattle, the yokes I have got. but But the chains & ropes I have never seen except one that was taken from the Indians It is supposed the Indians stole them all. If Br Mercer returns the cattle & cannot wait upon me for pay for Herds
