May 29, 1854 ~ Monday

Monday 29th we rise this morning in the midst of a great snow
storm the Lake is vary rough we took breakfast then road through
a driving snow storm to Lehi or Dry Creek 4 miles & spent

Lehi 4 pm Meeting {in the} School house sing{ing} Prayer by E. T. Benson {and} Singing W Woodruff {I} am always ready {and} will{ing to} do my part {we have} [h]ad {a} very interest{ing} journey {in} visit{ing} S[aints] {and have} heard {a} good deal {of} Co [counsel] many subjects presented but {the} main subject {is} our present [Salva[tio]n] our location our forting up ag[ain]st any emergency {I} do meet {with} any strong walls here or any fences whenever our leaders give Co [counsel] it {is} neccesary {and} for our good {we} sho[ul]d {be} prep[are]d for any emergency whe[the]r against red white or blacks Cast [illegible] proved {the} Co {to be} [illegible] while {we have} peace {and} [resd] carry out {the} [instances] {and} prepare for war you want {a} good fort {and} good walls {and} now {is the} time for it {to be} done this {is} one [prin[ciple]] {of the} gospel for your benefit you ought {to} make you {a} good wall {as we have} built one {in}GSLC {do we} need it {there} you certainly need it here you {have} noth{ing to} hinder any ppl [people] making war upon you why {have the} Presy urged these things for {the} last 4 yrs They {have been} inspired {to} do it when {the} councils [a]r[e] carried out {there is} safety it matters not {to} me what {I am} am counselled {to} do {the} leaders {of} [illegible] ma[y] not {have} carried out all {their} designs but they {have as} far {as} far {as there is} faith among {the} ppl Then exert yourselves {to} secure yourselves {in} this place {the} signs {of the} times indicate {an} important time {and we} do not {know} what {a} little time ma[y] bring forth {to} us when {the Lord} tells us what {to} do it {it is} for us {to} carry them out {we} did not carry out {the} laws given us {in} Jackson Co. {the} Prest {of} Stakes Bishops {and} all authorities shod {be} always ready {to} carry out {the} suggestions given {to} us when {we} can submit {the} weightier matters {of} our salvation {to the} autho why {is} it that {that we} can not submit {the} lesser matters {to} them {we} shod {as} ready {to} allow them {to} control us {in} Cattle &c as {to} seal {a} wife or {a} husband then Build you good walls {and have} good gates so that you ma[y] {be} secure {we} shod {be} ready {to} pay our tithes for it {is a} standing law {to} this ppl then examine yourselves {and} see if you {have} carried out all {the} councils given you our religion {is} different {to the} Sectarian world not {in} our Sunda[y] clothes but {in} our forts {and in} our temporal salvation when {I see} see this place {I} ask myself {the} question {has there} not {been} Council given {to} fort {in} or why {is} it that nothing {has been} done {I} do not see any thing more important than {to have} your gates so that you ma[y] open them when your friends come or keep them close agst {an} enemy
