April 6th 1856 Conference commenced in the Bowery
[FIGURE 16] this morning at 10 oclok the minutes of which are
published in the Deseret News of April 9th. At 5 oclock PM
Elders P P Pratt O Pratt, W Woodruff L Snow & E Snow
Blessed 115 Missionaries who were appointed to go on Missions
to the Lamanites & Gentiles. The day was occupied by President
Young G. A. Smith And O pratt.

Smith, E. T. Benson, A. Lyman, L. Snow, E. Snow. Seventies: Joseph Young, Levi W. Hancock, Henry Herriman, Zera Pulsipher, A. P. Rockwood, H. S. El- dredge. High Priests's Quorum: David Pettegrew. Presiding Bishop: Edward Hunter. Patriarch: Isaac Morley. Presidency of the Stake: David Fullmer, Thomas Rhoads, P. H. Young. Clerk of Conference: Thomas Bullock. Reporters: Geo. D. Watt, John V. Long. Choir sung a hymn. Called to order by Prest. Kimball, who requested the congregation to close up, keep order, and be as quiet as possible, that all may hear. Our religion comprehends every thing on the earth, therefore let us be Saints, for to us this is the very gate to heaven. A hymn was read by the clerk; sung by the choir. Prayer by Prest. J. M. Grant. Singing by the choir. Prest. B. Young exhorted the saints to keep profound silence, and told the doorkeepers to stop driving away those children who come early in order to get a seat in which to hear and worship comfortably. Elder George A. Smith addressed the congregation, saying it is enough to try the lungs of a giant to speak to this immense congregation. Alluded to the church on the 6th of April, 1830, when it was organized with six mem- bers, and now those few have increased to a great and mighty people. Referred to the first cause which pro- duced the exterminating order of Governor Boggs in Mis- souri. Exhorted the people to make good fences, to save forage, and provide comfortable shelter for cattle in win- ter, and spoke upon other matters of policy. Compared the blessings of health we enjoy with the sickness in Illinois and Missouri. Names of 177 persons, called to go on missions, were read. Prest. Kimball notified those whose names were read to come to the Tabernacle at 5 o'clock this evening, that they may receive their blessings and make arrangements for starting. Choir sung, "O my Father, thou that dwellest." Benediction by Elder W. Woodruff April 6, 2 p.m. Called to order by Prest. Kimball A hymn, by Bernard Snow, was read; sung by the choir. Prayer by Prest. Joseph Young. Choir sung a hymn. Elder Orson Pratt asked a blessing on the sacramental emblems, and preached to the assembled thousands. Names of 70 persons, selected to go on missions, were read. Choir sung an anthem. Benediction by Lorenzo Snow. 5 p.m. 115 missionaries received their blessings under the hands of Elders P. P. Pratt, O. Pratt, G. A. Smith, W. Woodruff, L. Snow and E. Snow.

The Conference commenced at 10 o'clock. There were on the Stand Presidents Young Kimball and Grant and of the Twelve Orson Hyde Parley P. Pratt Orson Pratt Wilford Woodruff George A Smith Ezra T. Benson Lorenzo Snow and Erastus Snow with the usual presiding members and quorums of the Church. The absent members of the quorum of the Church were John Taylor in New York presiding over the Churches in the States Franklin Richards in Liverpool presiding ofver the European Mission and Amasa Lyman and Charles C. Rich in San Barnadino At five oclock P.M. of the first day of the Conference Elders Parley P. Pratt Wilford Woodruff Lorenzo Snow and Erastus Snow blessed 115 missionaries who were appointed to go on missions to the Lamanites and to the nations. This first day was occupied by President Young George A Smith and Orson Pratt. The forepart of the next day was occupied by Parley P. Pratt ^and^ Lorenzo Snow and in the afternoon Wilford Woodruff delivered and address upon the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing Society. The authorities were presented and sustained and Wilford Woodruff appointed Assistant Historian.
