Discourse 1883-08-02
President W. Woodruff. I desire to make a few remarks, with the President's permission. The ordinance of washing of feet was introduced by the Joseph associated with the School of the Prophets; there was also a washing of feet connected with the endowments given in the Kirtland Temple which was continued until the time the Saints left there. In Nauvoo he introduced the endowments we are receiving to-day. I agree with President Taylor's views with regard to our giving endowments. I do think we should be more cautious and careful who we receive into our Endowment House to give them full endowments. With regard to giving a portion thereof, and then letting candidates prove themselves worthy before receiving the rest, that of course is a matter to be left to Prest. Taylor. I do not believe, however, that a man should be allowed to go into that house who does not pay tithing, and who drinks and curses and swears. President Taylor. And breaks the Sabbath day President Woodruff. Yes, sir; a man who breaks the Sabbath day has no business there.
