Letter to Marriner Wood Merrill, 29 August 1888
(Salt Lake City, Utah, ) President M. W. Merrill, Logan Temple. Dear Brother: At a meeting of the Council of the Apostles yesterday it was decided that the Presidency of our Temple should be separated from the Presidency of the Stake, lest if we should be attacked with a view of getting possession of our Temples an attempt should be made to show a connection between the Church and the Temple Association, because of the President of the Temple acting in a high Church capacity. This is the policy that is suggested by our attorneys as safe, and we have thought it best to adopt it. We understand that in consequence of your position you have not been able to appear but little in public, or to take any public action in your office for some time; but your name is presented, we suppose, at your Quarterly Conferences as First Counselor to Brother Card. It will be well hereafter to not have your name presented in this capacity; and in order that there may be no misapprehension upon the subject, the reason should be carefully explained to the priesthood, and as far as prudent to the conference. Of course, it will be well, in making the explanation in public, to have it done as carefully as possible. With kind regards, I am, your brother, Wilford Woodruff
Letter from William Clark and S. Haigh, 29 August 1888
San Jose, Cal. . Prest. W. Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir Sometime ago we offered to Mr B. Young a tract of land in the province of Durango, Mexico, which we though might suit your people for a colony. There are nearly seven millions (7,000,000) of acres in the tract, comprising hill, valley & mountain land. It is so far away from the U.S. that we thought it would secure your people many years im- munity & perhaps enable you to secure a seaport of your own, without which ^as^ a nation you must always be at the mercy of your neighbors. Mr. Young referred us to you. At present one of the owners is away from home, as soon as he returns we will get his lowest figure for the whole or part. It is a tract sufficient- ly large to give you scope enough for many years, and in our opinion it is better to concentrate your strength & energy on one place — if you desire to become (as we naturally infer) a power separate and distinct from other nations — than to spread your energies over a dozen separate colonies. The tract mentioned is said to be well watered
Letter from William Budge, 29 August 1888
Prest W. Woodruff Dear Bro: After I left you that evening I got another telegram from Bro. Nibley which showed that matters were moving favorably at Boise. Bro N. has returned and reports that an under- standing was arrived at in regard to our supporting the Democratic Party. We are hopeful of compara- tive peace from this on. The Govenor and Mr Hawley will both see the Judge and arrange to make a test case that will, we hope, solve the question of the right of our people in Bingham and Oneida Counties to take the test oath without any furthur trouble. The case will come up about the first of October, at which date the Courts meets at Blackfoot. Unless we feel perfectly sure of a decision in our favor we will not risk the case, as it is certain we can vote in Bear Lake and Cassia Counties without difficulty or fear of prosecution.
