Letter to Karl Gottfried Maeser, 28 February 1890
Gen. Supt. K. G. Maeser, Church Board of Education. Dear Brother: With the desire to assist the Latter-day Saints College in this city the First Presidency have offered to the Stake Board the services of Elder Joseph Dedtrich, free of all c^h^rarges, as a professor of German in the College, the present arrangement not being ientirely satisfactory to the patrons of the College; Brother Willard Done, though an excellent instructor in many branches, not being sufficiently acquainted with the German language to make his instructions in this branch as ad- vantageous to the students as they should be. But the appointment of Brother Diedt- rich would be at least a technical infringment of the rules we have ourselves made with regard to teachers in the Church schools receiving certificates for the branche^s^ ^in^ which they give instructions. What course do you suggest to bridge over this dif- ficulty? Brother Dedtrich, as you are probably aware, is not only a good German scholar, but a man of culture in other directions, and may possibly be of use to the institution as an instructor in other branches, after mastering the English language. With kindest regards, Your Brother, W Woodruff

It was held at Pendleton In consequence of the mobocratic spirit in the town of Manchester there had been no Conference over six months and the Elders and Saints were very anxious I should attend. It was a cold foggy morning and my con- dition was not one in which a doctor would have allowed me to go out on such an errand But I felt anxious to go. So I went quietly to the Lord and asked Him to strengthen & heal me that I might attend the Conference at Pendleton. The train left the Exchange Station in Lethebarie St at 9 am., about 20 minutes walk from the house. When I got off it was ten min- utes to 9. I called a hansom cab and rode to the station got my ticket and had two or three minutes to spare. At about 10:10 I reached my destination. It was a heavy fog. Two of the brethren met me at the depot and we went
