Letter from William Orme Lee, 18 June 1891
Recd 11 July 1891. [end of sideways text] Fagalii Upolu, Samoa, June, 18th 1891 To the First Presidency, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Dear Brethren: We take pleasure in informing you that Bros Van Cott, Bridges and Butler arrived here in safety on the 13th inst. after a very pleasant voyage from Utah. The brethren are all feeling well and anxious to begin their duties in their new fields of labor. The health of the mission is good with the exception of Sister Merrill who has been sick for some three weeks with the grip, or some thing similar, but is now recovering. For this reason, which greatly increases the duties of my wife, we were disappointed at not meeting Sister Browning, however, seeing that Bro. B. has changed his mind about the advisibility of her coming, we will consider it all for the best and act accordingly. We received the King's books all right and they are a handsome set, have arranged to call on the King next Tuesday and no doubt he will be pleased with his present, especially as at the present time, when his throne seems so shakey and the air so full of rumors of another war. We do not mix up in such matter, only as is consistent with servants of God and peacemakers showing the horrors of war and the advantage of peace. We do not apprehend any serious trouble, as there seems to be a determination on the part of the three great powers to promptly quell any future up rising on the part of the Samoans Since writing you last month, we have made the trip spoken of to the east end of this island, we finished our station there, then decorated the house with Bible pictures (which Bro. Geo Reynolds sent) flowers and ferns, and after one of our pleasant native feasts, held Conference with the Saints
