President W. Woodruff Dear Bro I have made several trips during the last six or eight months outside of this Stake, but three specially in the interest of the people part at least of such expence has some times been met by those most concerned, but I have thought it best now not to introduce any claim that the people might think should be met by the free will offring which we ^are^ encourage- ing them to sustain. Seventy-five dollars would satisfy me, if you think it best to pay that amount from the offring, but if you think otherwise we will do the best we can. In the past I have not been, at times, able to avoid spending both time and means in con- nection with matters that have been important, and that could not always be explained. Vernal, Uintah Co., Utah, Pres. Wilford Woodruff. Salt Lake City Dear Bro. You have no doubt heard that I had been arrested and I thought I had better write a few words explanitory of the matter. I left Salt Lake on night train and came right through. The Deputies followed right in. I heard of their being on the road and got out of the way. They came to my house searched it and the premises and then started with my wife to Ft Duchesne, to the Commisoners I was notified of it and beat them there and gave my self up. I did this rather than have my family taken before the courts. Now my oldest son Enos ^was^ calculating starting on a mission to Europe soon. Now unless you need him, It would be much better for me to have him remain
