August 20, 1892 ~ Saturday

20 I was vary weary & staid in camp Brother Clayton
went out to shoot some chickens He shot Eleven times
the last shot He killed 2 chickens & the charge of shot
struck the side of a rock, & glanced some 30 yards &
struck his brother Tyler Clayton, & hit his horse that
he was abot to mount the saddle. 67 shot hit Tyler
in the throat, shoulder, Back, hand, & knee & 11 shot hit
the Horse And it was Marvellous that the shot did not
maim the Man or horse Brother Clayton caught 6 trout

Prest Wilford Woodruff— Salt Lake City Utah Dear Brother—I have no disire to increase your burdens God knows you have enough to bear, but I have been much exercised concerning a few points contained in Bro. Roberts lecture ^which he^ delivered before the Mutual Im- provement Asson on authority of Priesthood. I quote a few of eseveral items which have come to my mind, and in all that I say I desire to give no offence to my brethren in any particular. I can not say there is one iota of untruth contained in the lecture, but in my judgement the lecturer does not ex- plain, sufficiently, points of vital importance. These ^points^ "are a double signifficance at this period of political excitement; and ^the^ puting forth "liberal" ideas ^in political matters^ which have brought our Republic to the verge of desolution, and will ^yet^ prove an important factors in the ultimate [ov]erthrow of man made governments, vis perfect freedom [faded text]ie, debauch, the stronger oppress the weak, the rich grow [ri]cher the poor grow poorer; the spirit shrink and the body [en]large its beastly propensities, are distressing to contemplate. shoot some chicken & He shot 11. And the Last shot He killed 2 chickens & the charge struck the side of a rock and the charge glanced & shot James Tyler Young with 67 shot one in the Neck & Left hand, Bentd of the right knee & 2 in the upper right arm one in the back

in the right side on the Back & one on the right hip & 3 in the Horses Neck & one in the sho[u]lder & 4 in the Belly o3 in the flank Making 11 in the Horse & several in the saddle the rock was 35 yards from the gun & Young was 35 yards from the rock making 70 yard

This was a vary remarkable incident that a charge of shot from a No 16 shot gun should kill 2 chickens strike a rock & glance 7035 yards & put 7 shot into a Man & 11 in the a Horse & it did not mame either the Man or Horse the took one shot out of the knee the rest are in the body the one in the neck came near the Jugular vane
