Letter from Alexander Findlay Macdonald, 26 October 1892
Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua Pres. Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City, Utah, Dear Brother— Recently we recieved notice of a Land Tax. due at Colonia Diaz, amounting to $1582.05. On the land deeded to the Company by Judge Crosby, and Derby Johnson, the consideration $42188.00 rate of Tax 1/00 pr Annum ^& 25/00 Federal added.^ for 3 years since date of sale in 1889 up to Oct 1st which is the close of fiscal year. I went to Casas Grandes last saterday, and talked with the Rev. Collector, and he agreed to suspend collection for the time being, We will petition the Governer of the state; by to days mail, for abatement of Tax. In case they will not remit, what do you advise us to do? if it goes to sale it would not bring 10/00 of the above consideration, ifn fact it is not worth it, as compared with other lands in the market. The plea on which it was bought, to help the colonists at Diaz to Cattle Range, is not admitted, hence the Tax. Your brother in the Goseple A. F. Macdonald
