President Woodruff— Dear Sir: A most scurvy trick has been played upon me by a member of your church & I appeal to you. Two years go I met Ellen T. TJakeman & her husband Jas. T. Jakeman at Ephraim, & have met both of them occasionally since. The wife I knew must have ^had^ your confidence, since she was set apart to work in the interest of the Young women of the church. The husband I knew to be a Mormon &, while I looked upon him as without energy, I gave him credit for being honest because he was a Mormon—as I have done towards all Mormons. A year ago they started a paper in Spanish Fork. I was asked to encourage the work with an occasional contribution, & did so. Later they attempted to make it a party paper & asked the use of my name to help them. I give that on condition that I should not be made responsible for any debts. All that a mere acquaintance could do to help them I have done, according to my ability. In return for all this, James T. Jakeman came to me three days ago as I was talking on the street &, while professing the usual good will, asked me to go to Z.C.M.I. & identify him, as he
