Letter from Edward Rudolph Frei, 25 February 1893

Provo Pres. Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother. Having been informed to prepare for a mission to Switzerland and Germany, I would say in reply, that I feel weak and poorly prepared for so great responsibi- lity. I do not wish, however, to shrink from the call for I realize that it is the duty of every true Latter Day Saint to help spread the Gospel to those who are in darkness. I feel to surmount the difficulties which I have, and expect to be at your office at the appointed time, June 24, [18]93, ready to go upon my mission. Hoping the Lord will bless me to this end. I remain as ever your Brother in the Gospel. Edward R. Frei. John G. Hafen Bp. per Jacob Tobler couns. All right J. F. S.

I did not inform Bro. Bailey last month that money would be sent for him to return home with Bro. Bassett, thinking that perhaps when you received my letter of Jan. 2nd you would only send enough for the return fares of Elders Bassett and Abel, however upon the receipt of your favor of the 30th. ult. I informed Bro. Bailey that he would be honorably released to return home with Bros. Basset and Abel, but he told me that he would much prefer to remain on Samoa until April 26th (the date I in- formed him last month he would be released to return home) for he said he had received letters from his folks at home informing him that his parents had got the First Presidency to release him to return home on the steamer leaving here March 1st. 1893; I toald him that that did not make any difference watever for he had filled a good mission and would be honarlably released and would have the glorious privilege of attending the ded- ication of the Temple, and that I would rather have him return now than to wait two more months, but he said
