Letter from John Jenkins James, 29 June 1893
Ogden City, Utah, President Wilford Woodruff Dear Brother: I shall be ready to go on the mission, to which I was recently called on the 8th prst. Will call at the office on the Morning of the 5th to be set apart. Your Brother In the Gospel, John James 323 N. Street Salt Lake city Utah All right J. F. S.
Letter to John Daniel Thompson McAllister, 29 June 1893
Salt Lake City, Utah. . President J. D. T. McAllister, Manti Temple. Dear Brother: Brother Lewis Anderson has handed to us your letter of 28th inst. containing an account of the bills due different parties by the Manti Temple, most of which are due July 1st. Brother Anderson explained to us how pressing these claims against the Temple were, and that no extension of time could be obtained upon them. On the other hand we explained to him the situation the Church was in financially, and how impossible it was for us to appropriate hthe money necessary to pay these debts. The Church has no cash for any purpose whatever. The fact is, there is scarcely any cash tithing being received from the people, certainly not enough to meet the current expenses, and we cannot borrow, because the banks will not loan. Under the circumstances, and realizing the necessity of these Temple bills being paid, we have written to the Presidency of Sanpete Stake, asking them to raise the money among the people of that Stake, and suggesting that until this can be done, a few men who have means might advance the amount required to liquidate the indebtedness. You may therefore look to the Presidency of the Satake for the help you need. This statement of our condition will doubtless demonstrate to you the necessity of curtailing expenses in every possible direction, and not entering upon anything involving cash expenditure without it is absolutely necessary, and not then without first consulting us. We are
Letter to Isaac Cron, 29 June 1893
Mr. Isaac Cron, Pleasant Green. Dear Brother: Your letter of the 28th has just arrived and in reply will say: As I understand the matter of land there, I homesteaded a qua[r]ter section of land, but could not fulfill the law, and it was turned over to you, and you let me have 30 acres of it. I sold that 30 acres to my son Wilford, and I considered that that ended my con- nection with the land. I did something about the fencing, but I do not know how much it was nor what it was. Of course, we have never occupied any of it, but my son, I think, rented some of it to your cousin. I have talked with Wilford this morning concerning this letter, and he says you have some feelings about a mule that you let Flavel Spencer have and you hold Wilford responsible for it in some way; but this is a matter that I have no knowledge of nor any respon- siblility in. I have too much on my hands to be troubled with anything about this land. You will have to settle it with Wilford, and he ought to do what is right about it. I suppose he will write to you. His residence is in the 9th Ward, and Samuel Woolley is his Bishop. Your Brother, W. Woodruff
