Salt Lake City, President Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Sir:— You are respectfully invited by the Executive Committee of the Mid-summer Carnival to open the programme of our 4th. of July Celebration with prayer. The programme thus far arranged is as follows; Opening prayer by yourself, reading of the Declaration of Independence by Governor Wells, the main address by Prof. Talmidge and a short address by Dr. T. C. Iliff Hoping for an early reply, we are Very Truly Yours Executive Committee E G Rognon President {My health will not permit my [illegible shorthand], [although/I think] [illegible shorthand] otherwise [illegible shorthand] respond. Replying to your favor of late inviting me to open the program of the celebration of the 4th of July with prayer: I thank you very much for the courtesy your committee has extended to me and would be pleased to respond to your invitation if I were able to take part of such goings on [illegible shorthand] the invitation, but the [illegible shorthand] my health will not permit me to take part in such a to be [away any] at the time from the confines of home and office. I therefore think I am obliged to say to you as I I may say with some [illegible shorthand]}
Letter from Alma Cannon Lambert, 13 June 1896
Salt Lake City President Wilford Woodruff Dear Sir and Brother In reply to your letter of May 27th calling me on a mission to Australasia. I am pleased to state that I know of no obstacle to hinder me from going at the appointed time. I feel proud as well as pleased to think that I am counted worthy to bear the Gospel tidings to the nations of the earth and trust that our Father in Heaven will strengthen and support me in my humble efforts to perform this mission to His honor and glory to the satisfaction of His servants through whom I am called, and with the approval of my own conscience.
