Letter from Alonzo Pratt Kesler, 27 December 1897

Brooklyn, . 189 Prest. Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. My dear Brother: Just a word of advise: Senator Cannon often comes to New York and is willing and kind enough to speak at our Sunday services. The question is, will it be right for me to put an add in the paper, stating that the Senator will speak and also to publish a synopsis of his sermon. I am expecting to hold a con- ference here in Greater New York in a few weeks and the Senator has consented to come up and speak^,^ on one condition^,^ and i, e., that you will have no objection to me advertizing that the senator will preach. I understand th^a^t Senator Cannon is doing some confiden- tial business for you and I would not wish to do anything that would hinder or interfer with your business in any way. Brother Cannon was with us last Sunday and the Sunday before here at our services and we enjoyed his talk very much and I believe he can do some good for the meritorious cause in which we are engaged. We have plenty of work for go^o^d inteligent young men who are humble and well equiped with a knowledge of the gospel. We have some good singers with us from "Zion" and our services are quite interisting and attractive. We have a few very nice recent converts and expect to batpize two more next Sunday. Praying God to bless you, I remain, with love, Your brother, A. P. Kesler.

Letter to John Daniel Thompson McAllister, 27 December 1897

P. O. Box B. Salt Lake City, Utah, . Elder J. D. T. McAllister, President Manti Temple. Dear Brtother: My son Wilford and Bro. H. C. Barrell are about to visit Manti, and while there they would like to view the interior of the Temple. Please admit them for this purpose. Your Brother, Wilford Woodruff

Letter from George Goddard, 27 December 1897

To the "First Presidency" W. Woodruff, Geo Q. Cannon & Joseph F. Smith Dear Brethren / As an Elder in Israel, will you kindly permit me, the privilege of laying before you, practices, now being indulged in by students of our Colleges and Universities, (viz College Yells, and Foot ball games) both of which to say the least, are damaging to the respectability of such institutions, and very destructive in their tendency, of Life, Limb, and the High Religious tone, that should always characterize every latter day saint school of learning. A few days ago, as I was coming from the High Priests Meeting, I was much humiliated, (as a member of the Church) by the emblazioned announcement, in Main St, carried by boys, of a Foot ball game contest, between the Latter day saint College students, and those of some other institution. But thanks to the unanimous vote, and stand, taken by the members of the stake board of education, who resolved that, that game should not come off, although advertized; and it did not; I sincerely hope, that such an unmista^ca^ble impression was made, not only on the Presiding Authority of the College, but the students themselves, that will for ever prevent its resurrection. On my way to Lehi yesterday, my attention was directed to the large head lines, in the "Tribune." Was a slugging match, Ended in a row.

Letter from Board of Directors of the Veteran Artillerymen of Nauvoo Legion, 27 December 1897

Presidents Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, Joseph F. Smith, Dear Bretheren, The Veteran Artillery men of the Nauvoo Legion, who were called together last July for the purpose of firing salutes on the occa- sion of the Pioneer Jubilee, met and organized a society, to perpetuate the history of their battalion, encourage social relations and render aid to each other and their families, in case of sickness or death. It is not a secret nor political society, but one of mutual aid and benefit. That you may better understand our aims we enclose you a copy of the Constitution and By-laws, also a circular which is being distributed among former members of the Legion as we are seeking additions to our numbers. One object of our organization is to preserve all relics of the Artillery Battallion. We regretted to see the bad condition in which the mounted guns were last July; to prevent them becoming wholly ruined, we respectfully ask that the care of these relics be granted to our Association,
