Dear brother.

I have deferred until
the present time answering your
esteemed favor of the 8th inst. in which
you notify me that my name has
been suggested for a mission to
California and ask what my feelings
are in regard to the call—owing
to the fact that I desired, if possible,
to so arange my affairs that I
could accept the call in acknowledging
receipt of the notification: for of my
willingness to go, if it were a question
of willingness alone, I believe you do
not need to be assured

The difficulties which I have
met with in trying to bring my

affairs into satisfactory shape, however,
have been such that I have decided
to lay the circumstances frankly
before you, and ask your Kind counsel
as to whether I can, in justice to
my creditors and my family, as
well as with honor to myself, accept
the call at the present time.

Briefly, I owe twenty five
hundred dollars to a Philadelphia
mortagage and loan company, secured by
a trust deed on my house; I
owe twelve hundred dollars, secured
by my stock in Heber J Grant & Co; I
am also in arrears several hundred
dollars in tithing, as I found it
impossible to keep up my payments
during the financial stringency, when
it took all I could raise to satisfy
the demands of my creditors. I have

no income except my salary
and the dividends from my Grant & Co
stock, which latter do not nearly
suffice to pay the interest on my
indebtedness. I have nothing whatever
saved, as every cent I can put aside
after paying interest and living
expenses, goes to my creditors. By the
terms of the trust deed given to
secure the indebtedness on my home,
the interest payments must be
promptly met, or the property is
forfeited. My stock in Grant & Co
could not now be sold for sufficient
to pay off my indebtedness, and it would
also be forfeited if interest on the
notes to which it is attached as
collateral were not kept up.

My family consists of a wife
and three children: since my father's

death I have also had charge of
my mother's affairs and she too has
a large family, which has been
recently added to by the death of
my sister. Were I to leave, therefore,
and my income to cease, my
interest payments would default
and my family would be left
without the means of existence.

Unfortunately, neither my mother
nor my wife's mother is in any
position to lend her aid in case of
my absence.

I am most averse to anything
that looks like shirking, and greatly
regret having to trouble you with
this personal recital: but I have
considered it the wisest course to
fully explain all my circumstances

in order that you might know that
only reasons of importance would
impel me to advance anything
that might look like excusing
myself from a duty which I honor
and which I have always expected
to fulfil.

Again requesting your kind
counsel in this matter, I am
sincerely your brother
Horace G. Whitney

President Woodruff
Dear Brother:
I endorse the above as
a statement of facts. I am as fully satis-
fied that Bro. Horace is willing to respond
to this call, as I am that he has always
done his duty as a member of the 18th
ward. As our choir leader he is very (over)

efficient, and almost indispensable, as well as
useful in other ways. We would greatly
miss him and his labor. Nevertheless we
would waive all such considerations if you
should decide to send him elsewhere. He will,
I am assured, requit himself with credit
in any field. His financial situation is pre-
cisely as he represents it.

Yours Truly
Orson F. Whitney
Bishop 18th ward

Salt Lake City
November 26th 1894

Let him be honorably released from
any further call at this time, with
the understanding, that we would
be pleased to know, at any time in
the future; when he feels that his
circumstances would justify his
taking a mission. J. F. S.
