“Essential to Preserving Our History”
by Maddie Christensen
Meet Ann Hopkinson, one of the many volunteers for the Wilford Woodruff Papers Project. Ann helps digitize handwritten documents on a number of topics.
Ann recently retired from a 25-year career in web development from the Royal Military College of Canada. She originally found the Project through another editing project on FromThePage.com that focused on digitizing diaries from the province of Nova Scotia. She shares, “It didn’t take long to get hooked.”
Ann is particularly interested in historical documents and diaries. She finds it fascinating to look through the lens of people who were so essential to the formation of our current environment.
Ann is impressed by the Wilford Woodruff Papers’ “crowdsourced document digitization and preservation,” which “speaks volumes to the beneficial contributions of the internet.” She adds, “I am sure there are many like me out there who enjoy history and find this type of contribution to its preservation interesting.”
Ann would like everyone to know that “the Wilford Woodruff Papers, in addition to all the projects available, are essential to preserving our history and providing access for all. Digitizing historical documents permits this first-hand knowledge to become available to those with accessibility issues or geographical restraints as if sitting in the library reading the originals.”
