Letter to George Albert Smith, 15 July 1859
G. S. L. City, Bro: George A.: The Prest. has just sent over word to the office, that if we wished to forward any letters to you, there would be an opportunity this afternoon. As Bro. Jaques is hauling his hay, I forward this note. Bro. Stout has just received a letter from David Mc- Kenzie, Camp Floyd, from which I extract: "Myron Brewer has turned states evidence and testified that I engraved a copper-plate which he identified, that John M. Wallace was in league with himself and me, and in short spared no pains to liberate himself. Major Porter of the U. S. army and Col. Crossman testified that John M. Wallace some time since revealed to them personally and by letter, of the contemplated forgery (said letters were read in court) that the whole thing had been watched until it ripened so as to effect- ually entrap those concerned. John M. Wallace testified similarly to the preceding evidence; and that on the 5th of July in the evening, myself and Myron Brewer entered his back room showed him a plate and certain bills and that I remarked like this "my work is done, now do your's." another witness of the name of Linton (I think) testified to the fact of Myron Brewer selling him a bill below value; this Linton was of course set apart for this special object by John M. Wallace, such is in brief the substance of the testimony. I could only take a few notes. I requested Judge Eckels to furnish me a copy of the testimony
