Letter from Erastus Snow, 20 April 1886
St. Joseph, Arizona, . Mr. L. Allen. Dear Brother—I was much pleased to get your letter of March 18, though it was a long time finding me, on account of my being gone up to Peadres Verdes and on to the mountain, exploring for Pine timber and a road to it. Bishop Archi Gardner and others were with me, and all were well satisfied with the timber, its quality, as well as quantity, and facilities for roads and getting it out. Roads may cost $25,000 to $30,000 into five miles square of timber, and same road will lead into Carrolitas Basin (finest retreat in this mountain region) surrounded with immense forests of timber, like that on the Mogollon in Arizona. Game consists of deer, antelope, turkeys, quail, and on the streams ducks and geese. Fish are chiefly chubsbs and suckers. Along the Peadres Verdes there is much cottonwood, black willow, sycamore, and some ash and oak. On the foothills and ravines are live oak and juniper. Water soft, excellent mountain stream, about the size of Big Cottonwood, running over gravel and cobble rock.
