Letter from Charles Ora Card, 9 September 1887
Lees Creek Alberta Prests Wilford Woodruff Geo Q. Cannon and Joseph F Smith Salt Lake City Utah U. S. A. My Dear Brethren Your much esteemed favors of the 16 & 17 ult came to hand by our last mail and the kind sentiments contained therin were much appreciated by our little colony, who in return Send love and Blessings. As yet we have had no frost and a part of our grain is getting ripe and our vegitables, Lucerne &c are doing most excellently. You refer to the Freedom we enjoy We wish you all could share it with us, but trust ere long you may enjoy it at home. I believe the obedence of the saints and unity of the apostles will ere long produce this great boon that we so much desire. If we can be the Lords people in very deed the day will soon dawn that He will show forth His power in our diliverence. My prayer is that all of the Apostles may be preserved to behold the great day that their freedom may be restored, that they can move to and fro in the Land and bless the saints with their presence and wise counsels. When I reflect ^that^ Prest Taylor was deprived of his liberty for nearly three years and his career ^of usefulness^ shortened thereby, I hope and pray that it may not be so with those that remain although some of them
Letter from Charles Ora Card, 9 September 1887
Lees Creek Prest Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City Utah Dear Brother Since writing the accompaning communication this morning a Mr. McGrath agent of the North wWest Coal and Navigation Company called on me to confer with us in relation to the settlement of Our people upon their lands which I crossed about 2 months ago and found it very favorably located and the majority of it very good soil. They offer this land at $125 per acre for each 160 acres purchased and ^10 yrs^ time if we desire with 10 equal enstallments at 6 per cent interest. You will understand that we do not have to take only what they desire providing they will give a guarantee of of6 months Labor upon each 160 acres for 3 years. In addition to this offer as Lumber that the company manufacture on credit if we desire to aid us in building. This land is situated from 10 to 30 miles from here and would plant our settlements in easy reach of each other. These two tracts are locations I refered to in a former letter but did not know but what it was government land at the time. Thus you will note that the way is opening up for our people in these parts. Should we also settle upon these lands we would in my opinion have another strong company to work in our favor. I told the agent I would report on this matter and learn what the prospects are for more settlers and let them know Later. With Love I am your Brother in the Gospel C. O. Card
