Salt Lake City. President. Wilford Woodruff. Salt Lake City. Dear Brother: Yours of the 14th, containing a call to the missionary field, to hand. I feel to thank the Lord, that I, in my weakness, am account- ed worthy, to be called as a messenger of salvation. I regret that I cannot arrange my affairs so as to start from this city, October 10th. I am in the employ of F. Auerbach and, Bro. of this city, and I am obliged to give one months notice, of my inten- tion to quit their employ. so that it would be im- possible for me to start on the above date. To Presidend Wilford Woodruff and the Twelve Apostles: Dear Brethren—I have been advised to write to you a statement of my attitude before the Court on the day I received sen- tence for unlawful cohabitation. As you are aware the Ogden Herald stated that I had "promised to obey the law;" and the Deseret News added to this—"as construed by the Courts." I deny that I made any such pro- mise, either directly or indirectly. I never did believe—I do not to day believe—that a man can make this prom- ise and be consistent with his profession as a Latter-day saint. To have made it at the time and under the circumstances of my trial and sentence would have been revolting to every impulse of my heart, a violence to my faith, a dishonor to my family, a betrayal of the sacred principles I had embraced, and of the confidence of my brethren.
