Letter from William Budge, 28 July 1888
Salt Lake City. President Woodruff, Dear Bro.: You will doubtless ^remember^ my speaking to you several months ago in regard to getting Brother Nibley, to assist me in the political campaign before us in Idaho. Previous to that time he and I had travelled a great deal working at these matters, and since then I am safe in saying that fully half of our time has been used in this work. During the last six weeks we have travelled over 2500 miles by rail and paid every cent of our expenses out of our own fpockets. We are both quite willing to give our time to the public without money and without price, but we are unable to do that and then be compelled to raise money to meet our travelling expenses; also we think we ought not to be required to do it inasmuch as it is a labor which, in some respects, is in the interest of the whole Church. With what we have spent in this business during the last three months, and what we will be required to spend until the meeting of the Legislature in Decem- ber next, it will take at least one thousand dollars to meet these expenses. We are now starting for Boise, and on our way back will go through Cassia county to look after the political interests of our people, and try to get them all to work to one end, namely, that of securing the power in the land which justly belongs to us. Will you help us to this amount?
Letter from William Budge, 28 July 1888
Salt Lake City, . To Prersident Woodruff: The anti-Mormons of Bingham County, Idaho, threaten to prose- cute for perjury every one of our people who take the test oath, on the ground that they are "members of an organization which practice plural or celestial marriage as a doctrinal rite of such organization." In Bear Lake we have the County machinery of the government practically in our own hands, and there is not much danger there; but in Bingham, Oneida and Cassia counties the anti-Mormons have control, and as the sheriffs have the right under the law to subpeona jurors on an open venire, it gives them the power to pack juries on us wnho would convict in spite of any fair and reasonable charge that the Judge might give. If something is not done to thwart this scheme of our enemies very many of our people in the counties named will be intimidated sufficiently to keep them from voting, and those who do take the oath will lay themselves liable to the prosecutions above indicated. We have con- sulted the best attornies at hand and they suggest that we get one of the regis- trars, say in Bear Lake county, to refuse to register one of our brethren on the ground that he belongs to an organization that teaches and practices, etc. Then have this brother sue out a writ of mandamus to compel the registrar to do his duty. We would then have the opportunity to bring in Presidents of Stakes, Bishops and other leading men of our Church in Idaho to show whether or not that doctrine
