This day commenses a New year. 1888 is past and gone and borne its report to Heaven of all Men. what 1889 will bring to Pass time must Determin. Darkness covers the Earth, & gross Darkness the People And the warfare of Priest & People is still against the Church & Kingdom of God on the Earth. There is an Exertion made in Washington to get Utah Admitted into the Union as a state with the other Territories but there is a strong opposition to it by our Enemies.

Salt Lake City, Elder Charles England, Franklin. Dear Brother: Your name has been suggested and accepted as a Missionary to Great Britain The work of the Lord is progressing in the nations, and faithful, energetic Elders are needed in the ministry to promulgate the everlasting Gospel, openings for doing good appearing in numerous directions. Your- self, with others, having been selected for this Mission, should there be no reasonable obstacles to hinder you from going, we would be pleased to have you make your arrangements to start from this City at as early a date as Tuesday, 26th. February, 1889. Please let us know, at your earliest convenience, what your feelings are with regard to this call Your Brother in the Gospel, Wilford Woodruff P. S. Springvill[e] Utah Pres. Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother. I recieved yours of the first inst. and was very glad to hear from you, but was verry sorry to be made aware that you lacked a Photo of the Monument at Pisgah. I have been labor- ing under the idea that I sent you one when I sent to Bro. F. D. Richards & Bro. Lorenzo Snow, but I certainly must have been mistaken, although. when I was at Salt Lake on Thanksgiving times Bro. Franklin asked me if I had one for you? I answered, that I had sent you one.
