Letter from Ammon Meshach Tenney, 21 May 1889
President Wilford Woodruff, Dear Bro. You will doubtless remember of my writing to you about two years ago, asking permission to add another member to my family., which liberty you granted at that time. If I am still worthy I am now ready to fulfill that privilege. The lady is Sister Hettie Adams, daughter of J. J. Adams formerly of Brigham City, Arizona residing now in Diez, Mexico under the Bishopric of Bp. W. D. Johnson. If agreeable please send to me instructions how to proceed as I am instructed that our union can be consumated here-abouts. Will just say that I came here agreeable to th[e] suggestions you so kindly sent me when I was released, but it seems all most beyond my ability to remain here as there is no work to obtain & consequently a hard place for a poor man, but an excellent place for those of our people that have some means to use while they are making a home. There is a good field for active and energetic men especially any that can speak the Spanish for I feel that I have been of some service to our Breth- ren here since my arrival and would gladly stay but I feel it would be unwise to bring my family here & thus cause them to suffer for the necessities of life. With this view so soon as I can accomplish the allready stated object I will go home (alone) to St. Johns. So that you will know where to find me should the time come that I could be of Service to the grand work in which we are all engaged. I have been away from home 19 months & have been immediately under your supervision laboring in the Mission field. To whom shall I ask for a Recom- mend? Priest. C. F. Robson and others instructed me that it was my duty to Recommend My Self as I had been Presiding over the Mission where I had been laboring, but this seems rather awkward to me and if in case it be necessary to write to St. Johns to my Bishop it will require considerable time and thus work an injury to me as I have now spent so much time and have just arrived
