Letter from J. W. Powers, 8 May 1890

My dear sir, This will intro- duce to you Professor Wal- lace of the University of Edinburgh, who is studying irrigation in this country. Any facilities given him that will enable him to carry on these studies to advantage will be appreci- ated by myself. Yours with respect, J W Powers Mr Hiram Woodruff President of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City.

Letter to Francis Asbury Hammond, 8 May 1890

Salt Lake City, Utah, . President F. A. Hammond San Juan Stake. Dear Brother: We desire to call to your attention to the remonstrance which will be forwarded to you, if you have not already received it, protesting against the passage of congressional bills disfranchising non-polygamists. We desire you to see that this paper is signed in duplicate by all registered voters who can subscribe to it, at the earliest possible date; and as fast as returns are received from the dif- ferent precincts, please forward them according to the instructions accompanying the protest. We desire to impress upon you the importance of giving the matter your immediate and earnest attention, as it will probably be of no avail unless attended to at once. We have been informed that an impression has gone forth among the people that we are indifferent or reconciled to the idea of the disfranchisement of our brethren. If any such impression prevails among the people, it is erroneous. We deem it to be the duty of every Latter-day Saint to do everything in his power to defeat these infamous measures, in order that the responsibility of such action —if it should prevail—may rest solely upon our enemies, and none of it upon the Latter-day Saints. Your Brethren, Wilford Woodruff Jos. F. Smith

Letter from Thomas Edwin Ricks, 8 May 1890

Letter from Ward Eaton Pack Sr., 8 May 1890

[end sideways text] Honolulu H.I. May 8th[18]90 Prest W. Woodruff Dear Brother The the letter sent me by the Presidency of the Church appointing me to take the presidency of this Mission came duly to hand, also one with instructions to Prest King. With reference to myself I will say that I will endeavor to prove worthy of the confidence imposed in me. From past experience in this mission I have ample reason for anticipating the labors this great responsibility will place upon me. The character of the natives will be no new study to me having passed two missions amongst them previous to the present one, I have also had considerable exper- ience in sugar plantation life which I trust will be of benefit to me while I am here. Prest. King has turned ove[r] to me the books of the Mission and the charge of Laie and will tomorow fully resign to me the presidency of all matters pertaining to the mission as he expects to embark upon the Australia for California and thence to Utah with some thirty seven islanders accompany- -ing him from this Mission. We are now making sugar and will [want to] work as fast as consistant with the weather. We have reason for some dubiety with reference to being able to procure as many laborers upon the plantation as we would like and the nature of the work to be done will require but will try to obviate all trouble in this direction. Our work cattle are extrem- -ely poor this will be quite an obstacle in the way to putting in the number of acres of cane that rightfully should be planted this season.
