Honolulu H. I. Prest W. Woodruff, Dear Brother - The saints who have gathered to Laie, have been allowed by my predecessors here to occupy houselots wwhich means in most instances a little garden spot. Also to occupy places for the cultivation of Kalo (their principle food) free pf charge - unless it might be from time to time to bring us a few sweet potatoes or a little Poi for the use of our family. This condition places the Hawaiian upon the equal in independence with our cultivators of small farms in Utah, and upon the slightes pretence they are in a position to manifest indifference for labor, Previous to Bro Kings departure work was only performed during five days of each week, we now labor six days when the weather will permit. Tho scarcity of laborers caused me to make this, the only change made thus far during my presidency. The scarcity of laborers upon the plantation is amongst us a question of much serious thought. In the first place the whole number of able bodied laborers who live upon the land of Laie is not sufficient for the labor to be done. Consequently we must use old women and children of the school age, together
