Discourse 1891-05-03
Pres Woodruff said, In regard to the Manifesto. He thought he understood our people & situations. The plans were laid to take our Temples from us & stop our sacred ordinances & they would have accomplished it, had not the Lord told me to give the Manifesto It was contrary to my personal feelings, & I would not have taken the step without the inspiration of the Spirit. My Counselors & the Apostles have the testimony for themselves. This does not mean that any man should neglect or cast aside his wives or children any more than before. In honoring the law, families must not be cast aside
Discourse 1891-05-03
Pres W Woodruff said, No sect was free from the union of Church & State than was our church. In England our Elders have always respected the government & the officers have always protected us. This is Mormonism to sustain any government where we are that will sustain us. The Prophet Joseph always taught that the Saints should sustain the government & laws of the United States. Had the policy of the Pro- phet been carried out in regard to slavery the civil war would have been avoided. Ours is the grandest government founded on the most just constitution of any country on the earth, but if it takes a cause to break a its constitution a people will be found here in these mountains who will be inspired to save that constitution.
