Dear Brethern
Elder John C. Naglae, his son Hyrum, Geo Patton, W. J. Stevens, and
Wm. P. Nelsen, recently returned from a trip south, exploring the lands
of Canton Mina. Bro. J. H. Carlton, who went with them returned sooner
as he was kicked by a mule and could not go on, they travelled south
about 430 miles and were absent from July 24th to to Sept 8th.
The exploration in Mina, proved that there was not sufficient land
suitable for agriculture, the rivers running in deep caƱons, and the
country being very much broken, some good ranches for cattle, but
as a whole not suitable for colonising, but rich as a mineral
district. On their return they found a beautiful lake on the
mountain, with over a thousand acres of good meadow land
adjoining it, and if a Ranche on the San Juan river, east 25
miles and owned by a Mexican could be bought in connection
with this mountain tract, would make a desirable location.
We have reported the result of the exploration to Consul Maillefort
and last week while at La Ausencion, confering with a custom
House inspector sent by the Government, he suggested, that we
write to the General in command in the Yacqui Country, Sonora,
and try to get good public lands there. We have concluded this
would be the best we could do for the present so securing
