Pres Wilford Woodruff. S. L. City Dear Bro In reply to your letter calling me to a mission in Scandanavia to start next April I will say that If the Lord spares my life and preserves me in health I will try and be ready at that time to fill it. Letter to M. M. Estee, 23 September 1892

Hon. M. M. Estee, San Francisco, Cal. Dear Judge, Through the hand of our mutual friend, H. B. Clawson, Esq. we received two cases of wine each, which he informed us you had sent to us. We were surprised at receiving this wine, because this is the second time that you have done this, and we have not had the opportunity of reciprocating as we would feel to do. We appreciate your kindness very much, and thank you for the considerate feeling which prompted the sending of this. We shall value it much more than we would if it were not your gift. We may say as to the flavor of the wine that competent judges who have tasted it pronounce it excellent.

James of this colony, is a man of sterling worth and integrity; faithful to all the principles of the Gospel so far as we may judge from his daily life. He is also a man of great energy & perserverance, & through these qualities he has been of great benefit to the Mexican Mission & especially to this colony, both in obtaining & providing employment for the poor, & in forwarding our interests with the Mexican people, with whom he has acquired great influence. He is on the verge of financial ruin, because of having been induced, by persons in whom he had confidence, to taken part in the labor on this railroad (scheme); of which you doubtless already know a part of the history. He did a large amount of work on said R.R. grade, amounting, we understand, in the aggregate to several thousands of dollars worth. If the R. R. Co. had paid according to agreement, he would still be ^still en^ a prosperous & useful member of our community: but having been obliged to borrow means to pay his employer which he faithfully did, he has been also obliged to mortgage his property contiguous to this colony, and
