Letter from George Emmett Browning Sr., 2 January 1893

Fagalii, Upolu, Samoa. Jan. 2nd To the First Presidency, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brethren:- Your valued favor of Dec. 5th came duly to hand the 24th. alt., togather with the tracts you sent by mail for which we are thankful; we also had pleasure of meet- Elders B. H. Hollingworth and Charles Peterson, they were in the enjoyment of good health and spirits, and after staying in Apia for about two hours continued on their journey. I am pleased to learn that the two missionaries called for will be very likely to leave San Francisco for here on or about the 6th. inst. The political troubles here are about the same as they have been for months past, and it does not appear as though there will be any immediate settlement, however the telegraph reports you receive are nearly always exaggerated; while the political troubles greatly interfere with our labors, as the natives minds are so thoroughly takenup with polotics that they do not take much interest in religion, yet we are doing all we possibly can to teach the people the truths of the Gospel and feel encouraged in our labors, and I am very thank- ful to be able to report that all the Elders and Sisters both here and on the Friendly Islands as in the possession of good health. I have decided to release Elders Henry L. Bassett and George E. Abel to to return home on the steamer that will leave here for America on March 1st, and if it is agreeable to you we

Letter from John Neff, 2 January 1893

East Mill Creek . To the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dear Brethren: Your letter of the 7th ult. concerning our sending a representative to Provo to take the M.I.A. Normal course came duly to hand. We have considered the matter for some time and in reply will say that our ward is small, our numbers few, and the material required is not abundant among us. But few, if any of our young men are in circumstances to go and bear their own expenses. Besides, we think our M.I.A can get-along, perhaps, better than some others without this help, as we have the service of Bro Horace Cummings, Principal of our church school - the Central Seminary - as its president. Bro Cummings, besides being a teacher of experience, has devoted considerable time to the study of the Manuel, and for two years the Asso- ciation has persued with gratifying success the course marked out in it. While we can see that it would without doubt be a great benefit to have on or more of our young men take that course of study at the Academy their circumstances do not seem to warrant us in sending you the names of any, unless, on reading this, you still feel to require us to do so. Some time ago Bro. J.M. Fisher Jr. of this ward was called to take the course for the Sunday schools at the Academy, and we beg to explain that he is a young man of a large family of small children who depend upon his labor for their support. We feel it would be a hardship on them were he to go, though he is quite willing to do so. We therefore, respectfully ask that he be released honorably. Your brother in the Gospel, John Neff Bishop- pr C Let him be honorably exccused. J. F. S.
