Letter from William Dudley Shaw, 1 August 1893

Ogden, Utah, Prest. Willford Woodruff. Salt Lake Beloved Presedent, In answer to the call made of me to go on a mission to the Eastern States Sept 6, [18]93. I ever desire to be humble and obedient to what ever the Lord has for me to do. Thou[gh] I feel the weakest of weak as I have no Education but in my weak way strive to live so as to have the Spirit of the Lord for my guidence. My circumestances at present are not in a very good condition as the where I had all my money in Broke, and am called to very close termes to meet my bills. Also I have my house signed to a note of two thousand Doll— Hence if it would be the Lord's will to extend ^or prolong^ this call until I could get the Busness settled

Letter from Robert Sherwood, 1 August 1893

Wilford Woodruff Geo. Q. Cannon Jo's F. Smith First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Brethren, Your letter of yesterday is before me. I will here state my position. We have arrived at the season of the year when my business is more lucrative. The premises we occupy are under lease with heavy rent to the Home Fire Insurance Co till June [18]94, this would be difficult to dispose of; I pay for help each week $2200. At such times and without my supervision our shop would have to be closed. My family is six in number including aged father and mother I could meet all my indebtedness in finances. I hold myself obedient to your call for the upbulding of the work of our Lord and sSaviour. Your brother in the Gospel Robt Sherwood We do not want to break him up in business. I think he ought to be excused. J. F. S.
