Letter from Marriner Wood Merrill, 20 October 1893
Logan, Utah President Wilford Woodruff & Councillors Dear Brethern It has been sujested by Engineers and Partied supposed to know, that it would be a greater saveing on fuel for the Logan Temple to Change Our Boilders, take out the three we now have and put [in] one large 35 Horse power Boiler it is said that 50 pr cent less fuel will give the same Heat we now have, the New Boiler will cost $60000 and can be paid for some time in the future and a part we Produce and perhaps the Boilers we now have can be sold to help out with the expence also ^if sold^ in the future. I personally favor aney Changes to reduce our fuel expence, as I am sure we now use too much fuel for the amount of Heat we are obliged to have, and have been looking the matter for some time past it now takes about 150 Tons of Coal pr annum at $6.50 per Ton; I am assured that with a different Boiler we need onely to use 75 or 80 Tons pr year, the Boilers can be had here in Logan at the above price & terms of Payment &c we will have to Close the Temple for about 10 days or Two weeks if you approve of me trying the experiment. I am especealy interested in saveing fuel this coming winter as I do not know how to get it and think if we can make the the change and it proves successful it will be a good thing for all times to come. My own experience with Boilers leads me to believe it will be good to make the Change Respectfully M. W. Merrill
