Letter from Charles Ora Card and John A. Woolf, 23 October 1893

Prest Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City Utah U. S. A. Dear Brother As requested by a letter from Elder Geo. Reynolds of the 12th inst I write an explanation in relation to a letter addressed you By Brothers Robt and NWilliams Newton accusing me of unjustly taking one third each of their City lots. About one year ago Bp John A. Woolf ^and myself^ held a consultation over the unocupied city or town lots that we might be able to furnish the brethren who had families with building lots. The lots drefered to by the Bros Newton had no improvements on and but little prospects of being improved by them in consequence of these two brethren living out on their ranches and both being unmarried men: We concluded to divide this block with others as it was a little larger than usial & when we resurveyed we had 3 lots made of the two which contain within a small fraction of 1 1/4 acres after the resurvey.

Letter from Charles Ora Card, 23 October 1893

[end of sideways text] Cardston N. W. T. Canada 23rd Oct. 1893 Prest. Wilford Woodruff Salt Lake City Utah U. S A. Dear Brother Since I penned the expla[na]tion of the Newton Brothers, I feel it necessary to explain another matter which I feel I should do in justice to Bp. Woolf and myself: That is, in relation to our sabbath School missionary Brother Heber S. Allen who I have learned you have released in consequence of his circumstances consisting of indebted- ness, and being unable to find a suitable person to look after his business. I will next explain. When we received your circular last Sum- mer (June) I called the Bishop his counselors and the Sabbath School Superintendency to gather on this important question. While we were not requested particularly to send one of our number to be taught in the normal class the privilege was extended to us so to do; Being desirous to keep pace in sunday school matters we felt we could & were able & would embrace the privilege.
