of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Gentlemen:
In accordance
with your request is here in reduced
to writing the proposition I have al-
ready verbally made before you.
I have been informed by Prof. Wm.
M. Stewart that it is probably the
Church would discontinue her efforts
to develop a Church University and would
use them to build up the State University
were Dr James E Talmage appointed
as President of the University ^of Utah^. Now, from
the fact that it is simply impossible to
support two or more Universities in this
Territory and to undertake to do so would
be extremely oppressive and burdensome
to our Citizens, and on account of my
interest in the development of a first-
class State University and in the material,
education and moral welfare of
