Letter to David Fisk Stout, 31 March 1894
Elder David F. Stout, Rockville. Dear Brother:— You have been called and appointed to succeed Elder C. W. Stayner in the Presidency of the Northern States Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and we have written to Elder Stayner informing him of his release and your appointment, and in reply he has informed us that he will return to Salt Lake City at the time of the General Annual Conference and there put you in possession of the necessary detailed information to enable you to understandingly assume the duties of your new position. To fulfil the purpose of the call now made upon you it is desirable that you arrange to proceed to your field of labor at as early a date as you find conveneient. On your arrival it will be your duty to take charge, as President of the Mission, of all the interests connected therewith; to see that the Gospel is preached, as far as possible, throughout all the States where the Elders now labor, and, as the Lord shall open the way, to seize any new opportunities which may present themselves for the introduction of the gospel to regions where it has not yet been preached. In short, we desire you to go forth as a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, fully equipped for the discharge of every duty connected with your calling, and to preside with wisdom and dignity over all the affairs of the Church in those parts of the land with full power to regulate everything connected therewith, and to make such changes and appointments as may in your judgment, under the direction of the Spirit

This morning your kind and encourageing letter, wa[s] [page cut off] received, also one from Mother, Clara, and Van. When I read such good letters I feel to thank my Heavenly Father that he has given me such Parents and my greatest desire is that I may be able to li[ve] [page cut off] so that I may be an honor to them or prove my[self] [page cut off] worthy of being born of such Parantage. It is a great experience for a young man like my[self] [page cut off] to be sent out into the world to warn them of the judgements which will overtake the earth, and seek to find the honest in heart and biring them to a knowledge of the truth. The immensity of the work which it is our duty to preform, can hardly be realized by our people. In this land alone there are many hundreds of thousands who ha[ve] [page cut off] never heard the welcome sound of everlasting lif[e] [page cut off] Take for instance this city, with a population of abo[ut] [page cut off] from 190000 to 200000 inhabitants. This city has heretofore been visited only a fiew times, by traveling
