Letter from Karl Gottfried Maeser, 20 May 1895

Provo, . President Wilford Woodruff. Dear Brother, At an interview with Prof. B. Cluff at his office this afternoon, I learned that the Normal Graduates of the Brigham Young Academy for this year have all been working hard at their very trying examinations in expectation of their diplomas conferring upon them the degree of Bachelor of Pedagogy. As in consequence of your injuction to the Principal there degrees could not be conferred, not only a very serious dis- appointment would ensue to the poor young ladies and gentlemen, but would also demonstrate a con- flict between the General Authorities and the Faculty of this Academy, which would prove very detrimental to the institution, therefore! I suggested to Prof. Cluff a com-

Lock Box 207 Independence Mo Mr Wilfred Woodruff Salt Lake City - Utah, Dear Sir: Some days ago I sent you circulars and letter, asking for your attention to the matter set forth therein. Thinking that possibly through the press of business, it might have escaped your attention, I again take the liberty to write you on the same subject, and please notice the contents of inclosed circular. Letter from Emile Hurler, 20 May 1895

To the First Presidency— of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brethern, In reply to your letter of July 1894 (begging pardon for the long delay,) would say as far as my feelings are concerned would have been on hand to have performed a mission, but conditions which I could not control placed me in a position, in which I did not see my way clear, and to this end write you explaining my circumstances, as also of my family, an then leave the issue in your hands. Owing to the hard times with us became embarrassed financially, which obligations am in duty bound to meet, and have not been enable to procure means to enable me to act as I would wish especially if my call should extend to the Swiss or German mission. Second my wife for several years has been in very poor health which is even worse at present, sudden spells of prostration requiring immediate attention to preserve her life, with several small children depending on her care, and no relatives able to assist her in my absence. I may possibly by spring be able to raise means to enable me to go to the Southern States of vacinity but hardly see my way clear to secure sufficient means to justify a foreign mission. I remain your Brother in the Covenant Emile Hurler, per. H. Very well. Let him be excused for the present and if at any time in the future, he feels able to go he can so notify us. J F. S
