Fri Dec 17th I went to the office wrote to M., thand was very busy until
430 pm when I went home.

Prest Cannon has read this [end of sideways text] Auckland New Zealand Dec. 17, 1897 President Wilford Woodruff, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Brother, We are in receipt of yours favors of Oct. 12 and 13th also Nov. 6th. Elders D. M. Haun and G. T. Judd arrived at Wellington Nov. 13th where I met them. They understood they were to have been joined at Vancouver by an Elder Rogers but up to date we have heard nothing of him. We look for Elders A. Sperry and Joseph Jensen in two or three days, and shall be pleased to receive them. I believe Elders Waters is acting in good faith regarding the Maori Child, and the parents seem anxious for him to take her. She, in company with others, may return about March next. I have felt since hearing of the Shaka Whanga case that the manner suggested would be the most likely way out, and that the best result, would be reached; and I think perhaps it can be brought about if outside relatives don't intercept it, but there are so many feeders to these Maroi matters it will have to be worked with great care. October 23rd seven returning Elders accompanied by one saint left Wellington per S. S. Warrimor. Elder R. A. Fenton was in charge of them. We had succeeded in raising the necessary funds for their return and got them on the way previous to receiving your instructions to issue a sight draft of $500.00.
